Popped bathroom tiles aren’t just an aesthetic issue. They’re usually a sign that something underneath has failed — moisture, waterproofing, or the screed itself.
If you’ve ever heard that tak tak sound or noticed tiles lifting, don’t ignore it.Quick fixes often make things worse in the long run.
Save this post for future reference, share it with someone renovating, and fix it properly the first time.

What Causes Bathroom Tiles To Pop?
To find a solution for this problem, we first have to understand why it happens! Tiles rarely fail on their own. When tiles pop, the issue is typically beneath the surface. Here are some common causes:
1. Moisture & Humidity
Bathrooms are constantly exposed to water and humidity. Over time, moisture can seep through grout lines and weaken the cement screed underneath
2. Failed Waterproofing
Waterproofing membranes don't last forever. When they fail, water can penetrate into the base layer, causing expansion and eventual tile detachment.
3. Deteriorated Cement Screed
The most common cause. In older bathrooms, the screed beneath the tiles may crack, weaken, or lose bonding strength. When the base fails, the tiles lose support and lift.
4. Air Pockets or Poor Installation
Improper tiling methods, hollow spots, or insufficient adhesive can lead to premature failure.
5. Natural Building Movement
Unlikely, but possible. Over time, buildings shift slightly. Without proper expansion allowances, pressure builds up and tiles may "pop".

Common Misconceptions About Popped Tiles
When tiles pop, many homeowners look for the fastest solution. Unfortunately, some "quick fixes" create much bigger problems later. A few common misconceptions: 1. "I can just overlay new tiles on top to solve the problem" While overlaying may seem convenient, it unfortunately does not fix the issue. The most common cause of popping tiles is because the base layer, the cement screed, has already failed. Overlaying the tiles over failed cement screed leads to trapped moisture and will lead to the new layer of tiles popping much sooner than you think. 2. "Won't HDB fix it for me?" In most cases, repairs fall under the homeowner's responsibility. HDB typically only covers bathroom upgrades under specific programmes such as recent HIP works, and not general tile failure. 3. "It's just one tile, so it's not serious." Often, one popped tile means multiple hollow tiles nearby. This visible damage is usually just the beginning.
What Should You Do Immediately If Your Tiles Pop?
If you notice lifted or hollow tiles: -Avoid using the affected area if possible -Be cautious of sharp edges - Avoid prolonged water exposure - Arrange for a professional assessment The sooner the issue is checked, the easier it is to manage before it escalates into larger water damage.
The Proper Way To Fix A Bathroom With Popped Tiles
If the screed or waterproofing has failed, it's time to consider renovating the entire bathroom. If budgets are tight, here's what you could do: 1. Hacking & removing existing floor tiles and damaged screed.
Don't forget to hack 1/2 tiles up the wall for the waterproofing as well!
2. Removing existing sanitary ware (W.C, Basin, Shower fittings)
3. Re-applying Waterproofing Membrane

4. Installing new cement screed with proper curing time
(Usually 24 hours for a water ponding test)

Laying new tiles correctly

Reinstalling new sanitary fittings and accessories

7. All Done!

This solution takes a little under 1 week to complete and costs around SGD$3000 - $4000 depending on your bathroom size. Remember that skipping steps may save money short-term, but it often results in repeat repairs!
Final Thoughts
Popped tiles are your bathroom's early warning system. Ignoring them won't make the problem disappear - it usually makes it worse. Understanding what's happening beneath the surface allows you to make informed decisions and avoid fixing the same issues twice. If you're unsure whether your bathroom can be repaired safely or needs a proper redo, it's always better to check before committing to a shortcut. Fix it once. Fix it right!
